The Ohio Emergency Management Agency, the National Weather Service Office and other agencies, are working together to promote National Flood Awareness Week.

The Richland County Commissioners Thursday issued a proclamation in observance of March 15-19 as National Flood Awareness Week and March 21-27 as Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week.

Richland County Emergency Management Agency Director Keith Markley told the commissioners the campaign provides information on keeping Ohioans safe during a flood.

Markley said in the U.S. the No.1  cause of death from weather is flooding. He said people don't realize the dangers of flooding. He said six inches of water can wash away an adult and two feet of water can wash away a vehicle.

Markley said educating the public about the dangers of severe weather is the goal of both campaigns.

He said with the severe spring weather season approaching, people should check their emergency supply kits and generators to make sure they are prepared.

For more information about National Flood Awareness Week, contact the Richland County E.M.A. office at 419-774-5686.
