Increasingly bold Sunni militants are declaring an Islamic State that extends from Syria to Iraq, and they have changed the name of their group to reflect that declaration. The Islamic state in Iraq and Al-Sham, or 'ISIS,' released its message Sunday. This comes amid conflicting reports of who is in control of Tikrit. A busy day for the ISIS propaganda machine, releasing not one but two recordings. The first, a video message purporting to show imprisoned Iraqi security forces, before the militant, speaking directly to the camera in English, says that the makeshift prison is blown up and all those inside killed, Of course, we cannot independently verify any of these claims, but it does send a very chilling message to the thousands of volunteers who have been joining the Iraqi Army. And the second, an audio recording announcing a name change to the Islamic State, but not just a name change. They're also announcing the establishment of a caliphate, one that they claim stretches from the north of Syria to the east of Iraq. Now, what makes this propaganda so powerful is that there is, of course, some truth to their claims. They do have a territorial footprint across quite a wide swath of this geography, and that's why the arrival of Russian fighter jets in Iraq this weekend has been met by, to some extent, the Iraqi government. It's in the sky that they have an upper hand. And we've seen that in their calling of airstrikes into Mosul and to the south, where, in as many days, they've received two attacks on one of their main military command bases. There has been so much claim and counter-claim from the very beginning of this conflict that it's very difficult to really get a sense of what is actually happening on the ground. Tikrit, to the north of Baghdad, is one such town where we've heard the Iraqi government claiming it, we've heard ISIS claiming it. But all we really know for sure is that the clashes can and do continue.
