Hundreds of people fled to shelters as a wildfire threatened an entire town outside Amarillo, Texas. Firefighters believe the fire has destroyed more than 100 homes. The fire is now 75 percent contained. Flames driven by strong, shifting winds ripped through the brush in the Texas panhandle. thick, black smoke cast shadows on the area as it blocked out the sun. Hutchingon County Emergency Management reported winds gusting up to 50 miles per hour. Crews came to help fight the fire from department all over the area. "Dalhart, Sanford, Hartley, Randall County, Cactus, Lefors, and I'm sure there are many more that I haven't even seen that were already assigned prior to our arrival," says District Fire Chief Dam Bush of the Amarillo Fire Department. Only later would officials understand the extent of the damage; the fire that started late Sunday afternoon had destroyed as many as 100 homes before midnight. Officials in Fritch say the fire covers hundreds of acres and puts their entire town at risk. The fire threatens more than 1,000 homes. Some 700-to-800 people evacuated, seeking shelter at a church and at the gym at a local high school. "The Red Cross is there to meet with them, give them anything they might need," says Chris Ray, a Texas State Trooper. While the wind is blamed for fanning the flames, it's not clear yet what exactly caused such a destructive wildfire. Officials believe the fire has now destroyed more than 100 homes and burned up to 1,500 acres.
