With projected starter at quarterback Tra'Von Chapman gone, Ashland University head football coach Lee Owens is looking at the next man up so to speak. After the spring football game in April, Owens had redshirt freshman Travis Tarnowski as second team quarterback with sophomore Austin Bruns at number three. But with Chapman gone the starting position at QB is up in the air once again.

Asked if he feels as though he is starting over again with a starter at quarterback Owens said yes, with a few exceptions. The Eagles will have their first two games against Lake Erie and Walsh at home, last season the Eagles opened on the road against Indianapolis and Wayne State. On defense, AU's defensive coordinator Tim Rose will be back as will linebacker Cody Bloom, both missed all or most of last season. In addition, Bruns now has game experience and has come back strong from his shoulder injury showing a good arm, while Tarnowski had an exceptional spring and as Owens says has the ability to make plays. The coach is quick to add that both will have to compete come August to earn the job.

On the situation with Chapman, when asked if he would do it all over again giving the Kent Roosevelt product a shot at AU he said he would.  Owens explained he thought Tra'Von would be able to fit into the AU family type atmosphere but apparently he was looking for something different, something the program could not provide on the D-2 level.
