It may be the start of summer but some high school football teams are starting to use some of their ten days. Several area teams have begun conditioning in an effort to get a jump start on August. At Galion, the Tigers like last season are working in June. One of the new rules they and all teams will have to deal with this season is the OHSAA's point differential rule which says if one team is up 30 points in the second half, the clock will continue to run. It will only stop on a charged timeout, change of quarter or injury.

If the score should get back below 30 points, then the game goes back to regular timing. Head coach at Galion Chris Hawkins is not in favor of the rule saying it cuts away from younger players getting a chance to play in games and takes away from those players getting a chance to earn varsity time on a Friday night.

On spring football, Hawkins says one alternative might be one weekend during the Spring, three hours on a Saturday, another three on Sunday afternoon where coaches would get a chance to drill their players without having the players choose between spring sports or spring football. Galion will also begin competition this season in the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference their third league in the last four years. The Tigers spent the last three seasons in the NCC, prior to that 66 years as a charter member of the NOL.
